We caught up with a friend of ours and had a sweet chat about sugar. We adore our buddy Deidra of “The Frosted Oven” and we thought it would be a great idea for her to share her knowledge with you as it relates to the information your pastry chef needs before you can get a quote from them.

Deidra is not the cake baker who drops your cake off in a box and leaves. No, she is so much more involved than that! She wants to meet with you and talk about who you are as a couple, how you met and your engagement story. She needs to also know things like your guest count, location for the wedding and reception, your particular flavor(s), and if there will be a groom’s cake. But most importantly she needs to know these three core things to begin to create your masterpiece:
Budget
No budget, no deal! We know you won’t know exacts on what your dream cake should cost, but have a max range and a minimum when it comes to what you want to spend. Try to be as realistic as possible. You know your food will be an expense. What is your cost per person? Consider your cake with that same idea in mind.

Inspiration
You need to have an idea of what you want. You can search the internet for inspiration which will give you a start on deciding what you want to see. Keep in mind, as you search, that adding flowers and bling will add to the cost of your cake. Just like those details add up on your wedding gown, or in your hair, it can be even more expensive on your cake…and that’s edible!

Colors and Style
Knowing if your style is more contemporary, modern, or classic plays a huge part with your cake design and how it can be created custom for you. Another great detail to have ready is the color of the bride’s dress. Understanding if it is white or ivory, or anything in between, helps to ensure the cake compliments you as the bride, and ultimately you both as the couple.
A bit of advice from our yummy confection creating friend to all brides, with as much compassion and understanding as possible, is to please not be a bridezilla. We all know that planning a wedding comes will added stress, and you know yourself better than anyone. Please know that when you hire a professional, we are there for you, and will help you through this process.
Your pastry chef will be your expert on pastries and cakes, you stationer will be your expert on stationary, your DJ will be your expert on music, and the list goes on. Being mindful and open before your start your planning process will be extremely helpful and make for a much smoother adventure.
Until next time…
be sweet & happy planning!
