Gone are the days of the long aluminum pans of baked chicken, oily green beans, and lumpy mashed potatoes. The creativity with food and the way in which it is served has grown immeasurably. You can wow your guests with just about anything…even if it is baked chicken. We want to take a little time today to share with you a few easy ways to zero in on your menu selections for your wedding day.

List what you like
Think about your favorite foods. What do you enjoy most at events. What’s something the both of you enjoy together. Then, think about, as Darius tells me, what makes your toes wiggle while you are eating it. Write down all of these ideas and see what you are most excited about serving your guests. Don’t go into creating your menu with a usual perspective. You only stifle the genius of your caterer. Make a list of foods you fancy and see what options you have from there. You may surprised at how things pan out (pun intended).
Communicate
If you are looking at your list and you think you have written an entrée that won’t be ideal for your wedding, don’t remove it. Talk with your caterer about it. It is possible that they can serve the dish in a way that makes it fun while still giving your guests a peek into your hearts. Caterers aren’t the people in the lunch line (shout out to my cafeteria fairy god mother Ms. Fisher), but they are in the business of making food pleasurable. They want to hit all of your senses. So if you have listed something that won’t work well for your wedding, allow them to tell you. Chances are they have done it before or will make it work.
Don’t over think it
Once you have decided on a menu that works for you and your fiancé, move on to the next planning task. Do not revert back to the list and do not second guess yourself. Often after we have completed something, we wonder if it could have been done better. We aren’t saying anything is wrong with that, but if the caterer thought your menu selections were great and you agreed at the time then let it go. Weddings are emotional and you simply want your guests to have the best. We understand that, but you have so much more to do. If after time has passed and you still have questions about your selections, have a candid conversation with your caterer. But again, don’t over think it.
Being sure you have created a menu that your wedding guests will enjoy can become a task, if you let it. The saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” should be updated because the same route can be taken for your wedding guests. They will remember how great the food was, so make sure you enjoy the vittles and the rest will take care of itself.
Until next time…
be sweet & happy planning!
